Anxiety Symptoms Overview

When the stress response activates, our body has to heal and restore the changes to return back to equanimity or homeostasis.

Normally our body does this in perfect balance and we feel calm and relaxed again within minutes after activation.

The stress response forcefully changes our bodies normal functioning to gain energy to activate the fight, freeze or flea response.

It is a last ditch emergency response to help us to stay alive in very dire situations.

It is a response built into our brains millions of years ago which enabled us to stay alive, when facing unpredictable, dangerous animals on daily basis.

It hard wires our brain, body, mind and emotions to react powerfully to physical encounters where we perceive danger, so that we optimise our chances of staying alive.

Stress helps us tremendously in physically dangerous situations, but in all other situations it actually makes us perform far worse.

And when the stress becomes chronic,  it wears our bodies down to the point where they cannot cope with constant requests to engage the flight, freeze or fight response.

Our bodies fall out of balance and cannot return to equanimity.

In this state of in balance, we now experience a wide array of mental, emotional and physical symptoms which we call anxiety symptoms.

Anxiety symptoms are the effect of stress building up in the body, brain and mind beyond the threshold for our bodies to cope.

The stress response make our mind sharp and heightens our awareness of danger.

But the prolonged activation of this response over weeks, months or years will cause brain fog, paranoia or an excessively agitated, obsessive or worrying mind.

Stress hormones force your body to create energy by sending sugar into the blood stream and sending blood to your muscles.

But if this process is overused, it tires and exhausts the body instead of energising it.

Stress hormones influence the functioning of every system in the body, which is why chronic stress can create anxiety symptoms in almost every area and system of the body.

 

In this worn down state we can experience two types of anxiety symptoms:

Acute - Immediate mental, emotional and physical symptoms as our stress response activates.

Chronic -  Symptoms which we experience from the long term wearing down effect, as our bodies become overwhelmed and unable to recover from the constant stress response activation.

Anxiety symptoms powerfully influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviours on a very deep level.

As our normal stress response reactions  become magnified to an unbalanced degree.

Once we have reached a point of high anxiety, then the chronic symptoms can be constant even when our stress response is no longer activated frequently.

It also can become a self-sustaining pattern:

Whereby the symptoms themselves become so uncomfortable that they trigger our stress response, which magnifies the symptoms, which triggers the response further....

Whereby if we only focus on coping or management our anxiety will never go away on its own, as it has become a self-reinforcing cycle.

Because every body is somewhat unique the specific pattern, type, intensity, duration and frequency of symptoms will be unique from person to person.

For example one person may have a single mild symptom and another person may have all of the symptoms to a severe degree.

The symptoms may vary, but anxiety is anxiety, so the route to recovery is always the same.

You may feel totally overwhelmed by the combined effect of having multiple mental, emotional and physical symptoms all at once.  (I know I did)

Which is why getting some type of support to conquer this problem is so essential, otherwise it can be an incredibly long struggle before someone can see the wood for the trees.

Other anxiety symptoms are often described as: Being like a hypochondriac, muscle twinges, worry all the time, tingles, gagging, tightness in the chest, tongue twitches, shaky, breath lump, heart beat problems, head tingles, itchy tingling in arms and legs, and so many more.

In addition, you might also find yourself worrying compulsively about:

By returning the client notes you agree with our terms and conditions and are confirming that all the details you have given are true and correct. We reserve the right to decline or discontinue working with any client without having to declare any reason. Payment may in some cases be required prior to any work being done and in all other cases is due in full at the end of the appointment. Payment can be made online, by cheque and of course by cash. The clinic operates a strict policy of 48 hours notice required to cancel or move an appointment. Any missed appointments will be charged for up to the full amount. Your session may be audio recorded for quality monitoring purposes. You can ask for a copy of your appointment so you can listen back to it. If you arrive for your appointment intoxicated or under the influence of recreational drugs we reserve the right to stop the appointment or decline seeing you. Due to the obvious fact that we are dealing with human behaviour we are unable to give any guarantees that we will be successful but we will do our best to help you achieve the changes that you want.
